Nevada Physicians CE Requirements, Accreditations & Approvals

In support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

The Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners and The Nevada State Board of Osteopathic Medicine accept courses from any provider who is ACCME-accredited and awards AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Continuing Education Requirement

MDs are required 40 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ every two years, 2 of which must be in ethics, pain management, and/or addiction care, 2 of which must be in suicide prevention and awareness every 4 years, and 20 of which must be within the physician's scope of practice. There is a one-time requirement of 4 hours in bioterrorism at initial licensure. NEW Beginning with renewals on or after January 1, 2024, all MDs will be required at least 2 hours related to the screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment approach to substance use disorder within 2 years of initial licensure.

MDs registered to dispense controlled substances Effective June 30, 2019, as a condition of license renewal, are required 2 hours in the misuse and abuse of controlled substances, the prescribing of opioids, or addiction. NEW After May 25, 2021, two (2) hours related to the screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment approach to substance use disorder becomes an option to fulfill this requirement.

Licensees who care for patients 60+ years are encouraged to take up to 4 hours for twice the credit in Geriatrics and Gerontology, or Alzheimer Disease or other forms of dementia (for a maximum 8 hours per biennium).

DOs are required 35 hours each year, 10 hours of which must be Category 1-A.* In even years only, licensees are required 2 hours in ethics, pain management, or addiction care and 2 hours of clinically-based suicide prevention and awareness. NEW Beginning with renewals on or after January 1, 2024, all DOs will be required at least 2 hours related to the screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment approach to substance use disorder within 2 years of initial licensure.

DOs registered to dispense controlled substances Effective January 1, 2018, are required 2 hours in the misuse and abuse of controlled substances, the prescribing of opioids, or addiction. NEW After May 25, 2021, two (2) hours related to the screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment approach to substance use disorder becomes an option to fulfill this requirement.

Psychiatrists NEW Beginning with renewals on or after January 1, 2022, all psychiatrists will be required at least 2 hours relating to cultural competency and diversity, equity and inclusion every renewal. These hours will count toward the continuing education requirement.

All MDs and DOs are encouraged to complete CE concerning methods for educating patients on how to effectively manage medications, including the ability of the patient to request to have the symptom or purpose for which a drug is prescribed included on the label attached to the drug container.

All MDs and DOs are encouraged to complete, as a part of their continuing education, training and education in the diagnosis of rare diseases, including, but not limited to, recognizing the symptoms of pediatric cancer and interpreting family history to determine whether such symptoms indicate a normal childhood illness or a condition that requires additional examination.

*All hours may be Category 1-A. Category 1-A courses are continuing medical education courses offered by a sponsor that is accredited to offer such courses by the American Osteopathic Association or the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
